Safety

Safety is our team's number one priority. As such, we have used our technological expertise to log air quality and noise levels at our shop and competitions. Check out our real-time logs below!

Corrective & Preventative Action Plan
Rotating as safety captain, students perform weekly safety checks around the shop. Upon identifying a hazard, the team outlines the needed action and assigns the appropriate person to the task, following up to make sure it is completed.
Creating a Culture of Safety
The Machine Mavericks invited the former head of DuPont Kingston to our in-house machine shop to review our safety procedures. He emphasized the importance of creating a culture of safety. At his suggestion, Safety Captain became a rotating role, and team members did presentations on aspects of safety of their choosing, from snake bites to safety lifting the robot.
To ensure all team members could safely use the machines regardless of previous experience, we subscribed to a series of DuPont safety & machining videos so students could get formal training on hand tools, the milling machine, the lathe, and more.
Workshop safety
Having an in-house machine shop comes with special safety considerations. Our shop is outfitted with the following:
  • Water bath for plasma cutter
  • Spine board
  • Proper ventilation for welder
  • Eyewash station
  • 3 Fire Extinguishers
  • Battery Spill Kit
  • WHMIS Station with MSDS
All students are required to wear appropriate PPE: safety glasses, steel-toed safety shoes, welding mask, respirator, hearing protection, shop apron, etc.  We also partnered with Earasers, an earplug company to provide ear protection to our students.
Innovation
  • Built object detector to recognize those not wearing safety glasses
  • Used photon board to track noise levels and air quality levels at FIRST tournaments
  • Weekly safety lottery rewards mistakes in order to eliminate them
