SAFETY IN OUR SHOP
Safety Certifications
Rotating as safety captain, students perform weekly safety checks around the shop. Upon identifying a hazard, the team outlines the needed action and assigns the appropriate person to the task, following up to make sure it is completed.
Creating a Culture of Safety
The Machine Mavericks invited the former head of DuPont Kingston to our in-house machine shop to review our safety procedures. He emphasized the importance of creating a culture of safety. At his suggestion, Safety Captain became a rotating role, and team members did presentations on aspects of safety of their choosing, from snake bites to safety lifting the robot.
To ensure all team members could safely use the machines regardless of previous experience, we subscribed to a series of DuPont safety & machining videos so students could get formal training on hand tools, the milling machine, the lathe, and more.
Workshop safety
Having an in-house machine shop comes with special safety considerations. Our shop is outfitted with the following:
Innovation
- ⅓ team certified in First Aid & CPR
- Entire team has Bronze Safety Badge
- Entire Team has WHMIS training
- 60 DuPont safety courses completed
